Lightweight Leave-In Conditioner with BTMS-25 & Glycerin

Lightweight handmade hair conditioner in a bright studio

BTMS-25 is a useful choice when you want conditioning slip without the richer feel of a heavy mask. This lotion-like leave-in combines a modest level of BTMS-25, a small amount of cetyl alcohol for body, and vegetable glycerin for humectancy.

Because this formula contains water, a suitable broad-spectrum cosmetic preservative is mandatory. The example below uses a placeholder percentage: select a preservative compatible with the formula and follow its supplier's exact usage rate, temperature and pH directions.

Formula: 100 g test batch

Ingredient % Weight
Distilled water 88%* 88 g*
BTMS-25 5% 5 g
Vegetable glycerin 3% 3 g
Cetyl alcohol 1.5% 1.5 g
Lightweight cosmetic oil 1.5% 1.5 g
Broad-spectrum cosmetic preservative 1%* 1 g*
Total 100% 100 g

\*Adjust the water percentage so the total remains 100% if your preservative requires a different usage rate.

Equipment

  • Digital scale accurate to 0.1 g
  • Two heat-safe beakers
  • Water bath
  • Mini mixer or homogenizer suitable for cosmetics
  • Thermometer
  • Calibrated pH meter
  • Clean pump bottle
  • Gloves and eye protection

Method

  1. Prepare phase A. Weigh distilled water and glycerin into the first beaker.
  2. Prepare phase B. Weigh BTMS-25, cetyl alcohol and lightweight oil into the second beaker.
  3. Heat both phases. Place both beakers in a water bath and heat them to approximately the same temperature, around 70–75°C, until phase B is completely melted.
  4. Emulsify. Slowly add the hot water phase to the oil phase while mixing. Blend in short bursts, then stir gently as the emulsion cools.
  5. Add preservative. At the temperature required by your preservative supplier, add the measured preservative and mix thoroughly.
  6. Check and adjust pH. At room temperature, measure pH with a calibrated meter. A target around pH 4.5–5.0 is commonly chosen for leave-in hair products. Use properly diluted acid or base solutions, adding tiny amounts and retesting. Never guess.
  7. Package. Transfer to a clean pump bottle, label with the batch date and keep a retained sample for observation.

How to use

Apply a pea-size amount to clean, damp hair, concentrating on mid-lengths and ends. Comb through and style as usual. Fine hair may need less; coarse or curly hair may prefer more.

Troubleshooting

The emulsion separates. The phases may have been at different temperatures or insufficiently mixed. Make a fresh pilot batch rather than trying to rescue a visibly unstable product.

It feels sticky. Reduce glycerin to 1–2% and add the difference to distilled water.

It feels waxy or heavy. Reduce BTMS-25 or cetyl alcohol slightly in the next test batch. Recheck stability after every change.

The pH drifts. Recheck after 24–48 hours. Persistent drift can indicate incompatibility or an unstable formula and requires reformulation.

Preservation and testing

Do not use kitchen food preservatives, vitamin E or essential oils as substitutes for a validated broad-spectrum cosmetic preservative. For personal use, make small batches, use clean packaging and discard immediately if odor, color, viscosity or appearance changes. Any product intended for sale requires professional stability, preservative-efficacy/microbial, packaging-compatibility and safety testing.
